WHAT IS ASHTANGA?
Ashtanga is an ancient system of yoga brought to the modern world by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois (1915 – 2009). Ashtanga yoga involves synchronizing the breath with a progressive series of postures–a process that produces internal heat and a purifying sweat that detoxifies muscles and organs. The result is improved circulation, a light and strong body, and a calm mind.
Ashtanga is a vinyasa based practice. Vinyasa is the synchronization of movement and breath. Practicing vinyasa turns static postures into a dynamic flow. Attention is placed on the breath and the journey between the asanas rather than solely on achieving perfect body alignment in an asana. Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is different from most yoga practiced in the western hemisphere in that asanas (postures) are practiced in accordance to a precisely defined sequence that is memorized and refined through sustained practice.
Ashtanga yoga consists of four main parts: an opening sequence, one of the six main series, a back-bending sequence, and a finishing sequence. Practice always ends with rest. The six main series are the Primary Series , the Intermediate Series and Advanced A, B, C and D series. Most people practice the Primary Series for many years and advance to Intermediate Series only when the challenges of the Primary Series no longer require complete concentration in order to maintain internal focus. We practice to achieve a “moving meditation”.
The goal of Ashtanga is not to learn the more difficult asanas but to become entirely present and comfortable in one’s practice.
WHAT IS MYSORE CLASS?
Mysore is the city in India where contemporary Ashtanga originates. In Mysore, India and in Mysore class, Ashtanga Yoga is taught through supervised self practice. The teacher provides instruction, encouragement and hands-on adjustments individually according to each student’s ability, physical strengths and limitations, and aptitude. Practice can take up to 2 hours. Students come and go during the Mysore class, depending on how long their practice takes. New students should plan for 45 minutes to an hour. Practice is silent for the most part. Individualized verbal instruction is in quiet tones and students are asked to arrive and depart as quietly as possible.
WHAT IS LED PRIMARY SERIES CLASS?
The asanas sequence in the Primary Series is designed to align and lenghten the spinal column, equalize the body’s strength to flexibility ratio and familiarize students with the particulars of their unique body structure.
LED PRIMARY SERIES CLASS provides students with the opportunity to move through the sequence while the teacher counts the vinyasas. This class is useful for students who practice regularly and those who have a working understanding of the Primary Series. There is minimal instruction and focus is on practicing correct vinyasa.
