The Dave Project, November 18

November 18 at 6pm

“Dave belongs to Mr. Miles/
Where the oven bakes and the poet biles.”

Dave the Potter or David Drake is one of the most significant and compelling but understudied artists in the history of American art. Born a slave in South Carolina, Dave was both a master potter and a master poet, and he gained fame decorating massive stoneware storage jars with short couplets. Forty of these vessels, each with a unique verse, are spread among museums and private collections today.

Chicago poet Orron Kenyetta and Chipstone Foundation curator Ethan Lasser have spent over a year thinking and talking about Dave with audiences across Milwaukee. On November 18th, The Dave Project will visit Chicago for the first time. Please join us for a dialogue about Dave, his poetry, and his legacy.
